Rules and Regulations

Please read and accept the rules and regulations.


Dates

  • The competition is open for applications until May 31, 2019.
  • Applicants will be notified of the results of the preliminary rounds no later than June 10.
  • August 1-2: Semifinal rounds (all categories), Kawai Concert Salon, Genius Planet, 6th Floor @ CentralWorld
  • August 3: Break (Categories A, B, and C)
  • August 4: Final rounds (all categories) and Winners' Gala Concert (The first prize winners will perform works selected by the jury members at 7pm), Chulalongkorn University Art and Cultural Hall

Eligibility

  • The competition is for young pianists with ASEAN countries only
  • Applicants who have lived in Thailand for five years or more are eligible to apply for all categories. The proof such as visa or school verification must be submitted along with the application.
  • Category A Ages 9 and under (Born on or after April 1, 2010)
  • Category B Ages 12 and under (Born on or after April 1, 2007)
  • Category C Ages 16 and under (Born on or after April 1, 2003)
  • All applications must be submitted along with the sign-up fees on or before May 31, 2019.

Judging Criteria

  • The competition has three rounds: preliminary, semi-final, and final.
  • For the preliminary round, video recordings (resolution at 720p or above) uploaded to various platforms, such as YouTube, Vimeo and Google Drive, will be accepted.
  • The results of the preliminary round will be sent to participants via e-mail, and will be published on the competition website (www.kt-apc.com).
  • Applicants who pass the preliminary screening will be invited to participate in the semi-final round at a venue to be announced later.
  • The jury’s decision is final. No appeals or objections will be accepted.
  • The first prize winners of previous years are not allowed to participate in the ASEAN Piano Competition 2019 in the same category, which he/she was awarded the prize.
  • The final results will be based on a cumulative scoring system, which uses the sum of the scores in semi-final and final rounds to determine the prize winners.
  • KT-APC reserves the right to cancel a category that has less than five qualified participants.
  • All results are final. The judges reserve the right not to award the first prize or any other prizes as they seem fit.

Repertoire for the Preliminary Round

All applicants must submit their application forms and provide a link to their video recordings which meet the following requirements:

  • The video must show both the face and the hands of the applicant within the same frame.
  • All pieces must be recorded continuously without any pauses or editing.
  • Videos should be uploaded to video sharing sites, such as YouTube, Vimeo and Google Drive, and the URL should be stated correctly in the application form.
  • Applicants must provide the name(s) of the piece(s), date of the recording and any other necessary information in the description box.

Performance Regulations

  • All contestants are not allowed to change the repertoire after the application.
  • All works must be played from memory.
  • All phases of the competition will be open to the public.
  • The performance in the semi-final and final rounds must meet the minimum time limit(if applicable); otherwise, the final results will be affected.
  • Transcriptions/Adaptations/Arrangements are acceptable. For example, a piece of music can be adapted for a different instrument than the original.
  • The pieces performed in the preliminary and semi-final rounds cannot be repeated in the final round.
  • The jury retains the right to stop a performance if the pianist exceeds the allotted time.

Application Fee

4,000 THB for all categories.

Semi-Final Round (Performance duration between 7 and 10 minutes)
1) Perform one piece by J.S. Bach from (A) or (B) in the Preliminary Round
2) Select one work from the following list:
    − Debussy “Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum” from Children’s Corner
    − Debussy “Golliwogg’s Cakewalk” from Children’s Corner
3) One or more works by Romantic or/and Contemporary composers (excluding Debussy) such as, but not limited to, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Ravel, Fauré, Bartok, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Satie, Gershwin, or Barber.
Final Round (Performance duration between 9 and 12 minutes)
(Compulsory) Select one work from the following list:
    − Mozart Rondo in D Major, K.485
    − Beethoven Rondo, Op. 51, No.1 in C Major
2) One or more works by Romantic or/and Contemporary composers (excluding Debussy) such as, but not limited to, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Ravel, Fauré, Bartok, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Satie, Gershwin, or Barber.

Note: The pieces performed in the previous rounds cannot be repeated in the final round.

Category C

(Age 16 and under)

Preliminary Round
1) (Compulsory) Chopin 3 Ecossaises, Op. 72 (Complete performance)
2) Select one Classical Sonata (first or final movement) by the following composers: Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven
3) Select one virtuosic study from the following list
    − Czerny Etude, Op. 299 No. 21-40
    − Moszkowski Etude, Op. 72
Semi-Final Round (Performance duration between 9 and 12 minutes)
1) Perform a selection of any 3 continuous movements from J. S. Bach’s French Suites, English Suites, or Partitas or One complete Prelude and Fugue from Well-Tempered Clavier from the following lists:
